Documentation (July 9, 2012)
Last week we didn't have discussion because we were having our first long exam in this subject. But last July 9, that's Monday, we had an intensive review and further discussion about the topics that will be included of the said exam. We had a short review on the animated movie entitled Impossible Dream, in where the mother or the female role does both reproductive and productive works which resulted to multiple burdens. We also heard that HDI (Human Development Index) is a measure that excludes women empowerment and includes the three basic dimension of human development specifically the health in general, knowledge and decent standard of living. We also tackled GDI (Gender Development Index) and SIGI (Social Institutions and Gender Index). We concluded that SIGI is more than the GDI because it looks at the biases of women from men. We also summarized the biases that still prevail in the current times. This includes preference for sons which resulted to missing girls, sexual harassment in the workplace, stereotyping like the idea that men are better managers and other discriminatory practices that prevents women to attain their fullest potentials. And again, we talked about the difference between sex and gender; that sex is a natural distinguishing variable and fixed during birth while gender as a social construct.
As an evaluation, each one of us is asked to construct one sentence that describes the current situation of women these times. Finally, we came into conclusion that "Women performs 66 % of the worlds work, produce ½ of the world's food but gets only 1/3 of the world's income and owns only 1% of the world's property". And also as a closing trivia, it is said that the equality between men and women will only happen 300 hundred years from now.
