Doing Sociology Gender Socialization
This exercise has opened my eyes to genderization and the effects that it carries with it. It is something that is all around us in our everyday lives and it has been engrained into our minds and society without us even being aware that it has taken an effect on us. Without us even being aware we base our behavior and even model our children according to the gender specific items that we buy and use. Everywhere we look there is the influence of society deciding how we approach and model our behavior according to our gender.
We are also passing this on to our children. It is an unspoken lesson that we teach them at all times without being aware of how it is going to affect the outcome of their life long behavior. We are predetermining what and who we are and also who are children will grow up to be with this genderizing behavior. Although I am now aware of these things is it something I can change? You want your family to be a normal part of society so does changing this behavior keep them from fitting in? These are some of the questions you have to ask. There is a reason we stick to these customs, so that we can be a normal productive part of society. So as for me I will continue to follow the norms but also think outside the box. Maybe one day if enough of us think outside the box we can make a small change which may then lead to a bigger change. As for now I think genderization is here to stay.
