In the United States our education system is not controlled by the federal government, which is common in most other countries, but rather by the individual states. The states having this authority allows for inconsistency in how young adults these days are being educated. There are students who do not benefit from the education system which leads them to not try in school or to even drop-out. From my own experience and the aid of several documents I have realized that some of the inconsistencies within our education system are due to the facts that there are students who are being left behind due to their lack of comprehension or sometimes interest and several who do not not have a sense of belonging while others do not have a proper support system.
To begin with, not every student is interested or sometimes capable to put in the time and effort needed to succeed in school. Having this distaste for learning causes these students to become at-risk, more prone to drop-out and for those who do graduate they are less likely to pursue a further education. According to Professor X's article "In the Basement of the Ivory Tower" for many of his students, "college was not a goal they spent years preparing for, but a place they landed in...." Some of the less resilent students do eventually persevere like many of Professor X's students, but with that percentage at a very low rate, some kind of reform needs to be done to the education system to help these students.
Furthermore, many students not just minorities feel that they do not belong. If the education system had more programs to help students bond more closely with other students those who felt left out would no longer feel that way. Although minorities are more likely to feel neglected or ignored, there are solutions to make it to where no one feels like a reject. In the article, "AP as an Intervention for Middle School Hispanic Students", the authors feel timing may be an important aspect for students to have a successful acceptance to a genuine group of individuals. It is important that the group be a genuine one because not all cliques have positive affects on a student's education, some cliques cause drifts between students and their education. Programs to help students feel accepted are essential to a successful education.
Equally important is a student's support system, whether it be someone at home or at school. The student has to find someone who they can trust and who encourages them to be successful. In the beginning of my education I had a support system, my mother, but as I progressed through middle school and eventually into high school I lost my support system. Not having that support system caused me to give up at times and withdraw from my education. Although there is not a real solution to fix the support system of a student I would just like to point out its importance to a student's
