Global warming is a serious problem that affects all of us and will continue to do so for a very long time if we do not do something about it. And soon! It is obvious that global warming is not at the top of President Obama's agenda. It is partly understandable with our current economic state.
The answer to Global Warming is not going to come easy. It is going to take a lot of work, but I believe we can start with addressing the auto industry, oil dependence and individual conservation.
The auto industry is a huge offender to global warming. Most cars require fuel which in turn emits a significant amount of carbon dioxide. And those numbers continue to rise. It should be in our favor that the auto industry is suffering the way that it is. As they continue to go to Washington with their hands out, we should be stricter in handing out the money. The bottom line is that the automakers need to make more Hybrid cars and they need to be affordable. I would consider myself to be the average person and I know that I cannot afford one. Let us take a look at our most affordable options from the "top three".
Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid: MSRP of $26,275.
Ford Fusion Hybrid: $27,270
Notice there is nothing from Dodge? Dodge currently only makes one Hybrid, an SUV, and pricing was not available online. Basically, after tax and tags, we are talking about a $30,000 vehicle. It is not feasible for most. The automakers need to get these prices into the late teens so that everyone can afford one. If I could afford Hybrid, I would do my part and buy one.
We need to do something about our dependence on oil altogether. I am not entirely familiar with oil and how to shy away from it altogether. I would suggest more windmill farms to generate electricity and solar panels for heating. It might not make the largest difference, but it is a start.
Lastly, individual conservation would make a huge difference. I know, Al Gore has preached to the choir time and time again about global warming and doing our part. I realize that his message has not reached many. I would suggest incentives to households. We get tax credits for purchasing new, energy saving appliances, but how about tax credits for keeping our electricity and home heating below a certain amount. Sadly, our society is about what we are going to get in return. Why not give a little more to see a result.
I know that my plans might seem minimal and they are, but it is a start. We must start now and make some positive changes. I think by starting small we can gain the support of congress and be on our way to a sustainable future.
