Patagonia immediately began making changes to their regulations and supply chain approach in an effort to prevent employees of the factories that manufacture their products. These changes included a partnership with Veritè, a non-profit organization “dedicated to ensuring people around the world work under safe, fair, and legal conditions.”. The changes created a comprehensive migrant worker standard that covers all aspects of employment in these factories. Topics covered in this new standard include pre-hiring interactions, labor contracts, employee’s retention of their passports, acceptable living and working conditions, grievances, procedures, and repatriation. Once the standard was finalized, Patagonia held a conference with all four of the factories responsible for the manufacturing of their products in Taiwan. In addition to these factories being expected to meet all of the expectations in the company’s new migrant worker standards by June 1, 2015, they were expected to reimburse foreign workers anything they had paid beyond the legally allowed fees and to no longer use employment brokers to hire migrant workers after that date.
