Good Marks in the First College Semester

During the first semester in college, most students tend to perform dismally because of poor study habits. As a result, they begin to have the notion that they cannot do well. However, all these are just thoughts, which are reversible. There are numerous tactics that students can employ in order to do well, for instance, getting to their classes on time every day, ensuring that they do their assignments properly and hand them in on time and ensuring that they practice proper time management. "There is much to be gained in college by making the right start" (Howard & Popenoe, n.d.).

In order to get to class on time, it is vital that they should make preparations for the class before they get to sleep. In order to avoid the morning rush, which may cause several inconveniences; it is vital that students lay out all they need the night before. In addition, for those who own vehicles, they should ensure that they fill their fuel tanks before the end of the day to avoid queuing up for fuel when it's time to go to college. They should ensure that their alarms ring early enough to wake them to go to school. Consequently, they will have enough time to do their morning preparations, such as brushing their teeth and taking their breakfast, and allow them to leave on time. Their schedule should focus on leaving enough time for them to focus on their studies. Keeping time shows the respect that they have to the rules, regulations and policies of academics.

Another responsibility that a successful student should accomplish is purchasing of a diary or an assignment notebook. With this, they may be able to record all important college dates, for instance those for taking exams and continuous assessment tests, and keep a track of important study chapters, and college events. The diary also enables the student to keep a record of the due dates for projects and assignments. Before the due dates, students should ensure that their assignments are well completed, which takes care of unforeseen circumstances, for instance illnesses and technological failure.

Absence from lectures should not be a norm for a successful student as this soon grows to become a bad habit. Also, students should ensure that they get to ask whatever they do not understand in class and do more research on subjects that seem complex. This will ensure that they get the full meaning of education that they receive in college. Being active in lectures, through asking for clarifications whenever one does not get the meaning, goes a long way in determining the level of success of students.

Lastly, proper time management is of the essence for successful students. Students should ensure that they have time to work on assignments, projects, study and even recreation. During study time, distractions such as phone calls are a no-no. The importance that students give to their time
