Hand on head-onism
The picture shows a girl, facing to sites. The girl is holding her head up with her hand, but there is also a hand on her head, that doesn't belong to her. On the hand (that doesn't belong to the girl) is there a piece on bacon, and there is also a rolex-watch on the arm. Behind the girl are there some lines, a window, and more hands, that don't belong to her. The colors in this picture are mostly pastels, and the hands around the girl are a bit transparent.
Amba Sayal Bennett, the artist, has painted herself, and the hand that holds her head, is a symbol of the way society force young girls to act, and behave. The girl can't move her head on her own, and the hand is directing her, and showing her where to go, and how to get there. There is bacon on the hand, and a rolex around the arm, which is the complete opposite of each other. You do not want to be fat, but you want to have the money to buy, and show of an expansive watch. The girl is holding her own head up, because the hands of society hold her down. The hands around her "the dead hands" is a symbol of legacy that also guides her way through life. The young girl can't make decisions for herself, and it has already been decided how she should life her life. She has to live up to her family name. The lines behind the girl are a symbol of lifelines. Also meaning that she has her life planed out for her, without her own help. On the left site, a window is shown; it is a symbol of where she is ending up when she becomes a woman, or where she wants to be - but can't because she has no choice of her own.
The colors on the picture are pastel. If it had been more powerful colors like strong red or strong blue, we would get the feeling of that she has control over her life, and a sure of who she are, and what she are becoming. Instead the colors are pastel, and almost transparent. The picture is a symbol of the transformation she is going through from a young girl, to a woman. At least, that's what I think.
