Heaven's Door
Earl was the typical hardworking person. He was 75 years old and worked in an amusement park as a technical supervisor. One day one of the games broke loose and was about to fall. A little girl was standing under the machine staring at it. Earl saw what was happening and he was going as fast as his old body could take him. Just when the vehicle lost its balance Earl shoved the girl away and the machine fell on him. Earl died.
After that Earl was just floating in what seemed a vast white ocean. He was in heaven. When suddenly he stopped in front of a man.
Earl knew who this man was almost instantly, his war commander was standing right in front of him holding a cigarette. Why was he there? Why him? Those were questions that could be going in anyone's mind if they were in this situation. However, Earl wasn't thinking of that, he was thinking about when they were fighting in Vietnam years ago. They were captured for seven months. When they escaped, they wanted to have revenge by burning their enemies' houses.
While burning the third house Earl heard a child crying, he wanted to save it. His partners were telling him to leave but he went inside and then everything went black. He was shot.
He woke up from his memories at the voice of his commander speaking. Earl asked him why was he here? The commander wanted to tell Earl what happened back at Vietnam.
When Earl fell after he was shot, the rest of the crew looked back seeing the unexpected. The commander was standing right behind holding a gun towards the unconscious body.
"Why the hell did you do that?!" Said the crew.
The commander explained that if earl would've gone in he would be dead anyway as the house was crumbling apart.
While they were taking the body out of the burning house they saw an old lady inside one of the houses, she seemed really mad. She grabbed a shotgun and the crew rushed to the truck leaving the old woman behind. She looked around her shooting and screaming "you won't get away with this!" They succeeded in escaping with Earl's unconscious body at the back of the truck.
Earl and the commander continued walking through heaven. Stopping in front of a little Asian girl, Earl's eyes teared up thinking of how such a young person died. Earl asked her her name and why was she here. She said "My name is Trin... and you burned me back in Vietnam. Earl fell to his knees.
He couldn't believe what he had done as this looked like an innocent girl that had nothing to do with the war. And was proof of how war never changes.
