1. West Africa- most slaves in the Atlantic Slave Trade came from Africa.
2. Gold- Before the discovery of the new world gold was Africa's most valuable trade item with both Arabs and Europeans before the discovery of the New World.
3. Slavery in Africa- The ancient Egyptians enslaved various groups of ppl- Semitic, Mediterranean, and Nubian black. Similar to chattel slavery, serfdom and dependent family membership.
4. Muslim Slavery-Slaves were viewed as having the same legal exclusion and spiritual value as a free person. They were allowed to marry, have a family, independent income, and purchase their freedom.
5. African Slave Trade- Wanted men more then women 2:1 ratio
6. Bridewealth-is given by the man's family to the woman's family, as compensation for the economic loss of a daughter 's labor upon marriage.
7. Kinship Ties-Land in Africa fell under the control of the state or the kinship group, which by tradition was identified as the descendents of the land's ancestral settler.
8. Ghana-was the first great West African state of which there is any record.
9. Mali-rised after the decline of Ghana in 1235.
10. Gao-was an important terminus of trade with both the surrounding hinterland and the trans-Sahara between the 10th and 13th centuries. Composed of 2 settlements Old Gao, and Gao-Saney.

12. Sundiata Keita- consolidated and strengthened the kingdom of Mali.
13. Mansa Musa- Descendent of Sundiata, 1312-1337 ruled a empire comprising much of what is no francophone Africa. An ardent and pious convert to Islam, pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324.
14. Songhay-emerged at the decline of Mali, its roots go back to the Sorko ppl, was ruled by Sonni Ali.
15. Bartolome de las Casas-Catholic friar in 1517 voiced his anguish over the plight of the Indians and suggested greater use of Africans, who were already being brought to America.
16. Indians- was the first source of labor in the new world.
17. Indentured Servants- meant that laborer agreed to serve a master for a term of yrs, after which they would gain freedom and ideally, a grand of land 3-7 yrs.
18. Economic Incentive- Using blacks instead of whites, blacks caused less problems, they were easy to identify and there was and inexhaustible supply.
19. Factories- European slave trading post know as factories was installed in fortifications along the African Coast.
20. Bloody Flux-a vaguely defined malady typically including diarrhea from which whites on board the slave ships were less likely to suffer.
