Interview with Supervisor
Operations are described as how goods or services in a company are delivered and what steps are taken to deliver those good or services. In an interview with my boss Gene Seymour, owner of Sparta Gym in Westbury, I found out how things in the gym are run.
The basic goal of my boss Gene is to provide a gym where people could change their bodies and their lifestyle. He stresses the importance of keeping the facility as clean and neat as possible. This is what separates him from other gyms he said, as people want to go to a place where it is clean and organized. Gene tries to be efficient as possible as there are only three employees who work here, as I am one of them. He saves money by having one person work a shift who can get all his tasks and assignments done rather than waste money and have two or more people work a shift that doesn't do what they are told. Payroll is something he tries to keep down every year.
Another aspect of this gym is the inventory that is accounted for. He makes sure all drinks are sold and accounted for and any other apparel as well. As well as inventory, gym members contracts are kept organized and filed away for any future use. Gym memberships could either be paid in by increments of 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1-year memberships or you can have memberships that are automatically paid from a person's credit card or checking account. There is certain software that is used called ASF International that automatically takes the members payments as well as keep all gym members information in the system either those who pay in full or by automatic payments. There are also utility, supply and maintenance bills that are paid every month. Utilities include gas, electric and water, the supplies include any cleaning items that are needed, and the maintenance is for any machine that is broken that needs repair.
Lastly the operation is one for marketing and promotion of his gym. He has a website and a place where he gets t-shirts, sweatshirts and tank tops get made. He also has advertisements in magazines or online as well. That also is another bill that needs to be paid.
Things that could use improvement would be his website he said as well promotional products and advertisements for the gym. He needs to get his gym well known to people. He would also like to hire a professional to help him sell gym memberships or sell his memberships his employees can make commission off of. He also would like to have more employees overall but the aggravation of training someone new and his impatience leads to him delaying that.
Overall, Sparta Gym has operations that include inventory, utilities, maintenance, payroll, marketing and advertising,
