Apple CEO Tim Cook displays the new iPad Mini tablet, which is priced starting at $329. The iPad Mini tablet, which similar to the original iPad, whose screen is about a third larger. The iPad Mini now comes in a 7.9-inch, which makes it one of the largest of the mini-tablets. It is limited by its non-retina 1024×768 display. Also, the iPad mini is incredibly thin just 7.2mm, 23% thinner than the original IPad.
The smaller iPad Mini was the main announcement during a media event here, which included updated desktop and portable Macs and a fourth-generation model of the original iPad--just 7½ months after the company announced what it called "the new iPad."
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for world-wide marketing, said that The iPad Mini was designed to fit comfortably in one hand. Also, he said the iPad Mini wasn't a shrunken version of the larger iPad (Lessin, and Sherr ).
The iPad Mini's screen measures 7.9 inches diagonally--compared with 9.7 inches for the original iPad. It weighs about half as much as the original one, but comes with less powerful processor and lower resolution screen. Apple has started shipping versions of the device two weeks ago.
The iPad Mini represents a change of heart for Apple. The company's late co-founder Steve Jobs, on an earnings call after the iPad was announced in 2010, dissed tablets smaller than the iPad. He said a 9.7-inch screen was the "minimum size needed to create tablet apps" and that 7 inches in particular was too small.
It comes in different types (16GB for $329, 32GB for $429, and 64GB for $519), but the $329 base price is significantly higher than the competition, and the 1024x768 display resolution isn't much better than pales in comparison to that of the Nook HD's 1440x900 and the 1280x800 Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.
In conclusion, Apple is not different from Google, Amazon and Samsung. Each company are trying to control the consumer market with different paths. In fact, Google wants to give everything away for cost because it makes their money on advertising. Amazon wants to give the hardware away so they can make money on content. Samsung is unique in that it makes everything. They want to eventually develop their own ecosystem on top of android that links their phones, tablets, televisions, etc. moreover, Samsung had a huge quarter with massive profits just like Apple. In my opinion, the new iPad Mini tablet is an important test for Apple because it is competing against Kindle Fire HD from Amazon and other devices such as Nook HD and Nexus 7 before they entered to the market. On the other hand, the price of the new iPad Mini is too high ($ 329) when we compared with Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD($ 199).
