Introduction

In this project we will analyze Japan transportation system and how did it affect the economic and social life activities.

The public transportation or the ‘mass transportation’ came into existence during the growing industrialization and because of the development of society. The need of mass transportation was practical in major developed cities. Japan has grown extremely at a very fast speed after the Hiroshima bombings. They have made new achievements in every technology. Public transportation system of Japan is one of the best in the world and they have the fastest trains. The transportation system has become the backbone of Japan’s economy. The economy doesn’t necessarily mean the financial growth, but also means the standard of living and the beautification of the country.

Japan's transport system is highly developed, with road and rail networks covering practically every part of the country together with wide air and sea services. The Japanese bullet trains have set against the transportation system. The bullet train is also known as Shinkansen, which are one of the fastest and safest railroad system in the world. The Shinkansen network is a proper way to travel around Japan. During their regular process, Shinkansen, or bullet trains, can be up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour. There are plans to raise this limit to around 330 to 350 K/H (205 mph to 217 mph) in the near future, after the success of these trains.

Shinkansen “bullet train”:

The Shinkansen was first introduced in 1964, where it was inaugurated at the Tokyo Olympic Games.  Initially, it operated for 515 kilometers (319 miles) between Tokyo and Osaka via Nagoya within 2 hours and a half instead of six and a half. The line was expanded southwest to Fukuoka, Kyushu, more than doubling the total length to 1,069 kilometers (663 miles) in 1975.

After analyzing these trains and their purpose, Japan has different climate and land. One of the bullet train called the Yamagata Shinkansen runs through northern parts of Japan, where winters are very snowy. In 1982, two new lines were introduced, a 497-kilometer (308-mile) way from Tokyo to Morioka (expanded to Hachinohe in 2002 and to Aomori in December 2010.) in the northeast, and a 342-kilometer (212-mile) stretch from Tokyo to northwestern Niigata along the Sea of Japan coast. In 1992 the northeastern road gained a new link between Fukushima and Yamagata (extended to Shinjo in 1999) and another link between Morioka and Akita in 1997.

The Olympic Winter Games was hosted in Tokyo after the new line that has been built to link Tokyo with Nagano in February 1998. There is also a plan to cover the entire country with a network of bullet train lines. The Kyushu Shinkansen began working on a 137.6-kilometer (86-mile) route between Kagoshima-Chuo Station and Shin-Yatsushiro Station in March 2004.

In March 2011 the path was developed from Shin-Yatsushiro to Hakata, enabling a direct link to Sanyo Shinkansen line. These were the features and objectives of the Shinkansen trains of Japan. The need for Shinkansen was to afford a high speed of transporting huge numbers of passengers over long distances, and it was popular not only among business workers but also tourists. In recent years, a growing number of people have begun using the Shinkansen to go to work. To meet the demands for more seats, "double-decker" cars have been introduced.

The technology used to operate these bullet trains was the most advanced technology, which gives guarantee, efficiency and safety for passengers. There are systems to automatically control the trains' speed, distance between trains, and can be stopped or slowed in emergencies. Also, in 2012, a new model was equipped with an automatic operating device and a new type of brakes. It was the most visited country in pacific and the Asia with more than 8.3 million visitors because of the flexible and fast transportations and it has good impact on the economy.

In 2013, because of the easy visa requirements for the Asian countries and low yen value, Japan has achieved a record of 11.25 million tourists more than what the government have expected which was only 10 million visitors, and that would never exist without great transportation system. After this surprising increase in the economy, it encouraged the government to attract 20 million tourists a year by 2020 in Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

In addition, there is a railway network for passengers and subway lines in many of Japan’s main cities. The subway system which has more than a dozen lines covering hundreds of kilometers of pathway is considered one of the most excellent in the world and continues to grow. Customer rail services like these are used by millions of people every day to get to and from work or school. Japanese trains of all kinds are famed for being clean and punctual.
