I have a two and a half year old son, and I've never given much thought about his language acquisition skills until I read "the innate capacity for language". I decided to relate it to my son's language skills. It is very interesting to me because he wants to understand two different languages simultaneously. He needs to acquire English language skills, and he also want to learn my mother tongue (German Language). I and her mum usually speak to him in English, same as they do at his daycare. However, he tries to listen anytime I'm speaking German to her mum, and he even try to blurt out some German words.
Basically he is exposed to more conversation in English than German. Therefore, he always speaks English. This supported what was said in the idea that "the innate module allow young children to develop language if they are exposed to an adequate sampling of conversation". In my son's case, he is exposed to more conversation in English rather than German.
Furthermore, I know that parents do help children to improve their language acquisition skills. When my son was about one year old, he will say "ta ta" meaning he wants water, we will reply back saying "do you want water". After few months, he stop saying "ta ta", he now says "I want water, I want this, I want that".
I believe that the innate mental module is complemented with learning or correction from parents or social experience.
