The past and the future are both very large places. The past is long, especially when you consider all of the different places in the world that have a history. And each place has different witnesses that saw the events differently and so each event has multiple stories. If you add up all the stories for all the events, the past is a very large place. The future is even larger than the past because the amount of time behind us has already been set, but the amount of time before us is a mystery. When we live in the present, we live in a very short place, that lasts one or two seconds before it becomes our past and a new present is with us. That short space of the present time connects the past and the future. If we are wise, we will use the present to our benefit. We cannot forget about the past or the future when we are living in the present.

Some people spend their entire lives thinking about the past. They are always stuck in the memories of their lives and they waste the short time of the present always remembering the past. These people are wasting their futures and cannot enjoy their time because they are stuck. Maybe they had a hard childhood, or they lost someone that they love, or maybe their past is empty and that emptiness haunts them. Whatever it is, the past is a weight that they wear around their neck that constantly pulls them down. The focus on the past causes these people to forget about the present and the future of their lives and it is all wasted. These people do not worry about their future at all.

Others choose to forget the past entirely and only focus on where they are going. These people are only connected to their future. They are deciding their life based only on hopes. They try to forget what they have been through because they see it as worthless. They throw it aside like garbage and do not realize the value in the lessons they have learned in their lives. Old friends are not as important as the friends they hope to make in the future. Nothing in the present is valuable to them because they always want something more, something better.

To live in the present is to live in the space that connects the past and the future. One cannot live in that space without seeing the front and the back. The future gives people hope. It connects people to their motivations and their desires. The past gives people the wisdom to achieve their hopes. It is the job of the present to link the two places and make decisions that considers both the history and the future.

Also, the past is the future because we wouldn't be in the place we are right now or heading where we are going, if we did not have this specific past. If we don't look in the past and learn how the people were living and learning, then we will not understand how we live and learn right now. The past is a tool
