A lot of students spend a great deal of time in the classroom. It is a place where our skills and talents are being developed and shared by someone else. It is where we learn new discoveries and experiences at the end of the day. In other words, it is where teaching and learning cycle occurs. According to Fraser (1994,1998), in order to achieve a conducive learning environment a favorable mood or atmosphere in a classroom should be promoted to ensure an effective teaching and learning process to take place. Likely, Chitravelu, Sithamparam and Tech (2005) opine that physical environment is important as an attractive classroom that will foster effective learning.
A special report by Jiggy Manicad of the Reporter’s Notebook documented the situation of the students in a rural area in Tacloban City wherein the students and teacher have their class discussion under the trees or anywhere that could give them a shade.Furthermore, the overcrowded population of the students inside the classroom are one of the issue that the Philippines is facing until today. A classroom that has 70 students were squeezed even if it should only hold 45 students. According to Luz Almeda of the Regional Director for the National Capital Region (NCR) office of the Department of Education, this current situations could lessen the students productivity if it is not resolved immediately. Lastly, an issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior spreads out that students in classrooms with inadequate material resources exhibit more mental health problems than students in classrooms without these issue. As a researcher and at the same time a student and who witness and experience this type of issue it is very serious to give a solution on this problem it’s because it gives a great impact on the students’ proficiency and productivity, that is why we as the researcher decided to come up with this study because we would like to know the thoughts and opinions and most especially the possible effects to the students. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Everyone aspire to achieve a career or level of success in life. Everyone has its distinct goal that they want to achieve someday. But one of the factors that affect the progress of a student is its learning environment. It is important to consider the classroom environment as student spend a considerable portion of their day in classroom. Four factors have been recommended that create a quality environment for young children, and especially ELS (De Bruin – Parecki et. al, 2008). The overall classroom arrangement should be engaging and appealing to the children providing them with opportunities for learning and interaction, while reflecting and valuing the children’s diversity and needs. It is important to have a consistent routine during the day. Finally, it is essential to create a learning environment that is rich in language. An article by Dorman (2002) which was entitled “Classroom Environment Research; Progress and Possibilities). This supports the fact that students learn better in a positive classroom environment in the school. One of the integral feature in creating a conducive learning environment is a good classroom organization and management.
The learning environment in the Philippines is probably like most develop nations. Unlike developed countries, students are provided with adequate, if not very sufficient and varied, instructional devices for classroom use to accommodate students with diverse learning style. The Philippines, being a third world country is one of those low economic countries providing low budget for education. A classroom of 50 students may have only one textbook, may lack chairs, lack technology equipment needed for learning. But the great deprivation of a lot by things may have been one reason why Filipinos have very high regard for education. One other reason is the competition in jobs requiring colleges graduates to get good jobs.
