Chapter I. Introduction

Background of the Study

Gadgets had really made a big impact to us human because it has been a helpful tool in all aspects of works. The term “Gadget” trace back to the 19th century for a technical item whose precise name one can’t remember. There are hundreds of gadgets with each of them having various functions and methods of use. As technology advances, new gadgets are appearing, and it has been used to collect information and has been very helpful especially to students.

As we observed our surroundings, we will notice that we are currently obsessed in gadgets to satisfy our needs in terms of entertainment. As a result, students tend to involve gadgets in their everyday lives including in their studies. Modern technologies impact on mental development when compared with the old technologies, especially on students. New media technologies and a number of important studies were conducted in the 2000’s on the impact of students’ intellectual development, and various aspects of using such technologies. Many researches were conducted aimed to organize understanding the change that took place by using these technologies, and to explore the conversion in students’ behavior and did focus to discover-what extent students feel aggression, and how they react by using these modern technologies e.g. video games, mobile phones with various applications embedded using via Internet with Wi-Fi connections video games consoles and internet. Students’ use of modern technologies and it impacts on change in their behavior with the result of aggression after using various modern technologies. (Van Mierlo, and Van den Bulck, 2004) 

This study aims to know how gadgets affect the studies of the freshmen students of the civil engineering. This study will show the researchers how gadgets can affect the study habits of the said students. As we know gadgets are now part of our daily basis. Though they were made to make our life better, it is undeniable fact that many of the gadgets have a negative influence upon the quality of our lives in some ways.

Statement of the Problem

Historically, there have been many claims about the beneficial effects of gadgets on student’s academic performance and there are also claims about the negative effects of using gadgets on student’s academic performance, but there has been little empirical work to verify them. In order to prove the impact and effects significantly, the researchers would like to precede a survey concerning the strategies of students in their academic performance. Our objective is to know the impacts of using gadgets on student’s academic performance as well as to compare correlation between studying with and without the use of gadgets on student’s academic performance. The researchers aim to answer the following:

  1. Does using gadgets significantly affect student’s learning or studying capabilities?
  2. Is it always beneficial in a student’s academic performance to use gadgets while studying?
  3. What are the positive and negative effects of using gadgets in a student’s academic performance?

Significance of the Study

The importance of this study is to prove and show students that using gadgets will help us in learning and studying. On the other hand the researchers would also like to show the different types of gadgets, its uses and impacts on student’s academic performance, that every student vary on what is more appropriate for them to use while learning and studying. Hence, it is important to know the suitable type of gadget to use while learning and studying.
