Managers & Leadership , the roles of Manager
- What is the difference between a manager and a leader? Can manager be a leader?
Regarding to book “The New Principles of Management” ,especially Warenn Beniss who continued the study of Abraham Zaleznik made the list of that diffences. Now, I am going to tell you the main differences between them :
- Managers administer / leaders innovate
- Managers focus on systems and structure / Leaders focus on people
- Managers do things right / Leaders do right things
- Managers maintain / Leaders develop
- Managers relies on control / Leaders inspire trust
- Managers have a short-term view / Leaders have a long-term perspective
- Managers accepts status quo / Leaders challenge status quo
- Managers have their eyes always on the bottom line / Leaders have their eyes on the horizon
- Managers imitate / Leaders originate
- Managers are the classic good soldier / Leaders are their own persons
Hence, in conclusion I would like to say that managers is the people who think more standard while leaders have creative mind, for example the manager try to solve the given as quick as possible while leader try to approach to the decision from different point of view.
Can manager be a leader? It is very interesting question, there are a lot of thoughts and they are absolutely different. Each person has his own point of view regarding to this question. In my opinion, it is impossible for manager to become a leader, because it is hard to implement all characteristics of leader into manager. Leadership skills can be congential or developed during all life of person starting from childhood. So, I think that it’s impossible to make leader from a manager.
- Do you know any negative examples of leaders? Explain why you consider this person a negative example of a leader?
Of course, there are good and bad leader, I would like to provide the good example of bad leader – Adolf Hitler. Therefore, why I choose this person, he was the absolutely crazy man who became a leader of German nation on the period of Second World War. First of all, I would like to tell that he went to his own goals, not the goal of all citizens of Germany. I guess that while Hitler was not a leader of Germany, no one didn’t think about the capture of all world. He did not care about their followers, furthermore Adolf don’t care about the ideas of others, the people must do what he tell – that was his idea. The other problem was that he abused of his power over the people, so they sent a lot of his followers for death just for achieving his own goals. Hence, that are the reasons why I choose him, moreover I can say that he was not a leader, he just was a manager!
