Movie - Essential Commodities in Human Daily Life

Movies are one of the essential commodities in human daily life. By watching different kinds of movies produced by different directors from different countries, we are actually absorbing those cultures, social patterns and people attitude of life. Basically movies are reflecting what's going on and the trend in one society. There are different kinds of movies as a term it's called "Genre". So as the following I would like to explain step by step from what is genre means, my chosen genre type which is romance genre, how's the development of it. I would chose three movies from the type romance genre in Hong Kong and analysis all three of them, and finally bring out is it the success or the failure of romance genre of Hong Kong film in local market in the last five years.
First of all, what is genre? Genres are largely the product of the studio system. The concept of genre is not limited to classifications and lists. People interact within genres daily. Genre is determined based "on the action it is used to accomplish" by the individuals using that particular genre (Miller 152). The distance between the text or action of genre and its users does not have to be vast. People respond to exigencies provided by genre every day. Exigency is "a set of particular social patterns and expectations that provides a socially objectified motive for addressing" the recurring situation of a particular genre (Miller 158). Seeing genre as a social action provides the "keys to understanding how to participate in the actions of a community" (Miller 165). Some studios specialized in particular genres. Mass media genres play a part in the construction of difference and identity, notably with regard to sexual difference and identity (Neale 1980, 56-62). Some film and television genres have traditionally been aimed primarily at, and stereotypically favored by, either a male or a female audience. For instance, war films and westerns tend to be regarded as 'masculine' genres, whilst soap operas and musicals tend to be regarded as 'feminine'. Genre also turns a film into an idea easily communicated and summarized, and marketable. Genre can also classify as form of art such as music, film, television, books etc. there are also distinguish one genre from another like horror, comedy and romance etc. Genre has also been used to shape differences in cultural aspects of these popular subjects. Genres sort media efficiently especially when following trends set by society.
