Oprah Winfrey is a great example of how women have changed in the past. Oprah has overcome a lot of obstacles in life, growing up from a poor and less fortunate family of abuse and sexual abuse. Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi where she was raised by her grandparents. Oprah ran away from home when she was thirteen years old to a juvenile center but was declined because there was not enough space for them to keep her. So as an alternative she moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she lived with her father. Her dad was very firm on her, he made read and do extra homework weekly, always pushing her to be the best she could be. Oprah attended college at Tennessee State University, where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. Because her father was so strict and firm with her, she was able to accomplish a lot in life. While in college Oprah became involved in a number of groups and followed her interests in media and journalism while at school. Although she had a tough life growing up, Oprah was always smart, so she graduated as an honors student.
Oprah Winfrey begin her talk show profession in the 70s , when she moved to Baltimore to join WJZ-TV news as a co-anchor, that's when she in discovered her calling in life as a talk show host. While working as a journalist and news reporter. Oprah found a new opportunity in Chicago to host WLS-TV's "AM Chicago," local talk show that was struggling to stay in business. According to times magazine, in less than a year Oprah manage to, turned the show into the most listen show in Chicago. What use to be a twenty minute show was transpired into a two hour show. The radio show was so successful that in and in September 1985 it was named "The Oprah Winfrey Show'.
The Oprah Winfrey Show became the most talk about show in nationwide in less than a year. "The Oprah Winfrey Show" received great recondition, three Daytime Emmy Awards in the categories of Outstanding Host, Outstanding Talk/Service Program and Outstanding Direction. "The Oprah Winfrey Show" received its second consecutive Daytime Emmy Award as Outstanding Talk/Service Program, and she herself received the International Radio and Television Society's "Broadcaster of the Year" Award. She was the youngest person and only the fifth woman ever to receive the honor in IRTS's 25-year history.
Oprah started her own production company called HARPO Productions, making her the first woman in history to own and produce her own talk show. Oprah is the world's richest woman mainly because of the popularity of her talk show. Her net worth is about $1 billion dollars. Oprah has lived her life to her motto "it doesn't matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph begins with you. Always." Oprah's talk show is unrivaled in popularity it is shown in over 100 other countries.
