It is a once-daily prescription medication for the treatment of COPD, which is a term that describes the lung diseases emphysema and chronic bronchitis. This product is the first inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that is also a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) for the treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD but not for the treatment of asthma. It is a once-daily medication, making it a new option that will be easier for people to use. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute estimates that 27 million Americans are affected by COPD, which is also expected to increase over time. This product’s benefits also serve to alleviate COPD symptoms and flare ups of these symptoms, which include shortness of breath, excess mucus, cough, change in color of sputum, fever, and fatigue.
Women are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with COPD than men. Americans over 45 as they are most likely to have COPD. When considering the differences between emphysema and CB demographics, men and women are almost equally likely to have emphysema while 94% of emphysema sufferers are over 45. Smokers and former smokers should also be targeted, as smoking is the primary cause of COPD and 80-90% of COPD deaths are caused by smoking. Caucasians and African Americans should be particularly targeted due to their status as the top two racial/ethnic groups diagnosed with COPD. Caucasians have the highest rate of diagnosis when compared to African Americans. 5.08% of Caucasians are diagnosed with CB, while 3.86% of African Americans are diagnosed. Caucasians also have significantly higher rates of emphysema than African Americans, coming in at 2.11% versus 0.81% of the African American population being diagnosed with emphysema.
