READING CHARACTERISICS OF ONLINE READERS AS USERS:
They are skilled
Online readers must possess computer skills so that they are able to manipulate and access the information they need online with ease. At least an online book user must necessarily be endowed with the basic computer application skills such as word processing, the knowledge of using the internet, basic web design among others. This will enable him/her to navigate through the documents with minimal difficulty.
They expect regular up-grading of information
In most cases the online book readers are people who need the most current information. That is why they prefer looking for information in the internet due to the ease of upgrading as compared to the print media which takes a lot of time before revision. Information should be more up to date. Real time data can be provided and there should be no need to make do with an old annual report if a new one has been filed.
They read extensively
The great degree of intimacy that is experienced in the print format reading is absent in the online case. It is difficult for the online readers to read intensively due to issues such as financial constraints, boredom sitting for a long time reading from one position especially where the device cannot be moved from one place to another with ease or where there is problem of power or the equipment is too large or heavy to carry.
They are flexible
As opposed to the printed book readers who are at times restricted on the amount of time they have to read a given book especially when they borrow from a library or other information centre, the online book reader has little restrictions and therefore work/read the way they choose. In other words an online book reader has a lot of freedom to choose how and when to read.
They are explorers
Electronic book readers have the capability of directing the users to other sources containing other related information on the subjects or topics of interest. They therefore tend to explore more on these areas as this is possible in one sitting. This is absolutely impossible with the printed books that where one cannot consult many books in a sitting as the book many not be available or may be held by another user.
