Riordan Manufacturing Business Service Request

Current System

Raw materials received at each Riordan Manufacturing plant are documented on paper and then passed to an inventory clerk to process into the company's database. This method of operations allows for many errors to occur which could be detrimental to business. One incorrect entry could mean the difference between 1,000 units in stock or 10,000. Depending on the item and the level required, this could lead to delays in parts ordering and shipping or a major surplus causing the company thousands of dollars, if not more.

Recommendation

For Riordan Manufacturing to compete with businesses in the new millennium, it must conform to businesses practices in the new millennium. Shipping and receiving operations personnel should be equipped with inventory equipment such as hand held wireless devices using bar code scanning to track shipments and process incoming supplies. Tablet personal computers reading RFID tags can immediately update inventory databases as the units are shipped or received. Partnering with a global shipping company such as FedEx can prove worthy on all levels. FedEx's computer shipping tracking products can be integrated with the company's current information systems to track shipments as they leave manufacturers, travel, and arrive at Riordan plants. This system can also work in the opposite direction for shipments leaving Riordan plants to be delivered to its customers. Email notifications will allow parties to track these shipments and update inventories instantly as shipments arrive at warehouses.

These types of updates will be required to be integrated with the Corporate IT update strategy and can improve overall worker productivity while guarantee correct inventory levels and shipping status.

Corporate Information Technology

Current System

This section will discuss the overall information technology system that employees use to login to Windows account. Due to the fact that the Riordan plants in Georgia and Michigan were acquired via buyouts, not all IT systems are similar across the corporation. This can lead to issues with purchasing replacements, inter-access across company virtual networks, and issues with administration of policies and operations of the IT network.

Due to the size of Riordan Manufacturing's personnel numbers, large systems and numerous amounts of hardware are not required to sustain day-to-day operations. However, with the addition of plant sites across the country and overseas, Riordan manufacturing should implement new, larger systems to allow for efficient worker potential and be prepared for future growth within the company.
