Sir Walter Raliegh thought to be born 1552-1554 in Devon England. Raw lie as it was pronounced was from a protestant family. Thirty years war would not start until 1618, the year of Sir Walters' death, and Europe was already in the battle between Protestants and Catholics. Raliegh's family had brushes with death for being Protestant. It was a matter of great furtune that Mary I was disposed and Elizebeth I was queen as Raleigh gained much favor when he was a leader against Irish insurrgents. Raliegh later received 40,000 acres for his part in defeating Irish Catholic insurrgents.
Raliegh was not such a great landlord but obviously was a great story teller. He gained much favor in the queens court and was knighted. He fell out of favor when he married one of the queens ladies in waiting. He was held in the tower of London for a few months as his wife was also held but in her case 6 months.
Raliegh was an explorer and a colonist to the new world. His colony did fail due to lack of supplies to his colony. His expeditions to South America cost him his son, Walter, life. Raliegh was eventually beheaded for his part in a expedition for gold in South America. His force attacked a Spanish post where Spanish soldiers were killed. The Spanish Ambassador the England demanded Raliegh's earlier death sentence, as party to over throw of James I, to be carried out.
Raliegh was beheaded on October 29, 1618.
It is so ironic theat he so greatly benefitted from the throne but als died by the throne.
