Domestic violence victims fall into the category of special people with special needs in the human services field. Domestic violence is a problem that is all too often overlooked, shorn of, and simply made excuses of. Domestic violence is not only physical abuse, but also includes psychological and sexual abuse. According to The Nemours Foundation (2012), "Abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, or a combination of any or all of these. Abuse can also be neglect." To take the beginning steps in resolving domestic violence issues they first must be identified and acknowledged. Special problems exist with domestic violence victims that are important for the human service worker to help their client identify with and begin treatment. Domestic violence victims have special needs including safe shelters. A human resource worker helps the victim find available resources. With service delivery there is barriers and practical solutions to those barriers.

It is important for a human service worker to be aware of reporting laws associated with domestic violence so that they may assist their client when necessary. In domestic violence cases in different states domestic abuse carries different weights as to how much punishment a person receives for spousal abuse. For the most part, domestic violence is left up to the victim to report. In states such as Texas, the victim is to get a protective order issued by the judge. This order protects the individual by law from the partner or spouse. The primary purpose of a protective order is to prohibit the abuser from continuing the abuse against the victim or against other members of the household. When a protective order is granted, law enforcement agencies receive a copy and are required by law to record the information in the order into a database.

Domestic violence is patterned behaviors that a person renders to another person. These behaviors become problems that a person cannot control. These problems can consist of physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, and a host of other kinds of abuse. These abusive acts can cause much pain to those around the abuser. Children being in an abusive home can be called names, slapped, punched, broken bones, and endless torture. This can cause them to have low self-esteem, hard to make friends, and even become domestic violence abusers themselves. The abuser's partner can also endure pain from pressured sexual acts, excessive jealousy, name calling, and prohibiting them from going out or going to work. When this happen the abuser's partner may resort to staying inside and not reporting them. The abuser's family members may try to help but the abuser may restrict their presence, fearing interference from them. The abuser's main concern is to have control over the people in their lives. The abuser may feel with interference from anyone their abusive traits may be revealed and they would be apprehended.
