Students will never admit it, but structure is important to them. They want to know that teachers and administrators care and through all the arguing, complaining, and whining, students respect teachers and administration who are consistent but fair. Students need boundaries although they will push them as far as they are allowed, and for most children, parents provide that structure. There are those who do not have that structure at home for whatever reasons, and this can lead to problems at school. There are a few things to keep in mind as a teacher and administrator. Sprick (2009) explains that discipline should be less punitive and more supportive, increasing motivation and achievement. We have to be compassionate but consistent and teach children what we expect. Response to Intervention is the next step. Sprick (2009) defines RTI as organized prevention/ intervention effort to identify those students and find an appropriate intervention. These interventions may include support from outside agencies. We must take student needs in consideration Students must understand that there are consequences for every action.
