There are 5 tried and true techniques that create cohesion and easy readability:
A firm structure
The key is to have a separate introduction, main body and conclusion. Each section should start with a sentence that clearly states the thesis to be fully developed in the rest of the paragraph. The opening sentence must either clearly stated the conclusion of the essay or make a reference that can be easily tied to that conclusion.
Make the right connections
Use transitional statements to connect paragraphs and to show how ideas flow. A rule of thumb is that the last sentence in a preceding paragraph should lead to the first sentence in the next. Use transitional words, such as "and", "however" or but" to connect or distinguish ideas within the same sentence or paragraph.
Build emphasis by repeating key words and phrases.
Repeat key words and place those words strategically in sentences in order to capture the reader's attention. Repetition also helps to promote retention. Other techniques such as stories, examples and case studies are also strong tools that help the reader with content retention.
Employ pronouns
Use pronouns such as "he" and "she" to remind the reader that the same, previously named, object remains the topic of discussion. This reduces the tedium that would result in using names too repetitively and creates and easy flow for the reader.
Closings
The concluding statements should leave the reader in no doubt of the idea the essay is meant to convey. The last sentence should be a clear and concise summary of the main concepts outlined in preceding paragraphs.
