In the article "The 21st Century at Work" written by Lynn Karoly and Constantijn W. A. Panis it talks about how in the next 10 to 15 years work in the United States will be changed. Workers will have to constantly educate themselves and keep retraining themselves because companies will just find someone else to do the job. Since technology is constantly changing workers need to keep up with this pace if they want to keep their jobs.

The article goes on to talk about how their will be a shift away from permanent jobs towards less permanent jobs. This change might be good for future workers who want to balance work and family obligations. This change might be flexible for people so they can have more independent jobs.

In spite everything the labor force has been growing more slowly over the past 20 years. Some of it might be because of the baby boom in 1964. The article also says that it might be because that there is a new trend that male workers are retiring earlier than before. Yet still the labor force has been growing because the participation of women in the work place and the increase of immigrants coming to this country.

The article talks about options for raising workforce growth in the future a reason for that might be cause of the far reaching consequences for the US economy. The growth rate of the future labor force limits the growth rate of the economy for any given rate of productivity growth. This slower economic growth is a concern because of the rising costs of Medicare and Social Security. The article continues to say given the right environment older workers will be motivated to retire later and will continue to contribute to the nation's prosperity.
