The Big "A" Unethical or Ethical

Abortion is one of the most controversial, ethical, and talked about issues around the globe; although according to the National Abortion Federation it has been an act executed for more than a thousand years. Also it is a fact that "At least half of American women will experience an unintended pregnancy by age 45, and, at current rates, one in 10 women will have an abortion by age 20, and one in four by age 30"(Guttmacher). Even last December it was shown that abortion is a tough subject even in the military: "Republican Senate leaders have an odd way of showing gratitude for the dedication and sacrifices of the more than 200,000 women on active duty in the military. Late last month, they blocked consideration of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would have lifted the statutory ban that denies female service members coverage for abortion care in cases of rape and incest. Currently, military health plans pay for abortions only when a pregnancy endangers a woman's life" (New York Times). While Abortion is not a choice that I would ever consider for myself I do believe that women as a society should have a freedom of choice to decide if we want to carry a potential human life. In addition there are many things to consider before aborting such as Health risks, Morality vs. immorality, Pro choice vs. pro life, religious beliefs, and where does the potential human life begin for you? Where do you stand on any of these topics and have you done enough research to make a confident and intelligent decision that is right for you. It should not be a decision made lightly, but with lots of thought and possibly even counseling before hand.

Another way to help us understand this process is to listen to someone who has gone through it. Although Most of the woman you hear from are women who now regret the decision; what about the ones who chose to have an abortion and still believe they made the right decision for themselves. Colleen Moon is one of those women. She was a young woman about to start college and although she had been having safe sex and using birth control she became pregnant and decided to have an abortion. Although the decision she made was difficult she knew it was right for her. One statement she made was "I thank God that abortion was an option I had, otherwise I wouldn't have the opportunities that I have now. I don't want to have children until I can give them a great home, with all of the comforts a child should have" (Moon). "No one should take that option away from women. No one And I will stand up for that right until the day I die" (NAF).It is stories like these that prove how many women are thankful for the option to make their own choice. It is of a paramount significance that our essential rights to choose as women are not an opposition for our kids.

On the website Religious tolerance everything on abortion is discussed, and the author Bruce Robinson wants you to know how he and the others on this site feel about abortion up front. They state at the top of their homepage that "We feel that all women considering an abortion should be fully informed and as free as possible from outside pressure" ( Religious tolerance). On this website there is a lot to learn a lot more than is known before most research. It is always a good idea to be very well informed before making such a heavy decision. This gives you a chance to really explore the idea of abortion. Most other sites come across mostly pro-life or pro-choice. Many Scientists believe that the exact moment when the sperm and egg unite it is a human life, while other side believes that not until the fourth week when there is a heart beat and even then some think it is only human after the birth of the baby. Even every woman's beliefs are different. Women in the situation should make that choice of abortion individually. Such as is it moral or immoral while many people believe that taking a life no matter the circumstance is wrong, but what about the women who have been raped, sexually molested by family or even a women who could die during labor. Should those women have to submit to a government or doctor's decision? Women have fought
