* The British government did not want to pay for another war, so it issued the Royal Proclamation of 1763 that limited western settlement.
* The proclamation angered many farmers and land speculators.
* Sugar act- lowered the tax rates on sugar such as raw sugar and molasses imports.
* The Stamp Act Crisis
* To raise more money to pay for the war Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765
* Quartering act- made colonists pay more for their own defense and provide housing for British troops.
* The Townshend's Acts
* 1767 British finance minister Charles Townshend introduced a new set of regulations and taxes known as the Townshend's Acts
* One of these acts, the revenue act of 1776, placed new customers duties on glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea, imported into the colonies.
* The revenue act legalized the use of general search warrants called writs of assistance.
* The Sons of Liberty encouraged colonists to support the boycott of British goods.
* On March 5, 1770, British troops fired into a crowd of colonists in Boston.
* A man of African and Native American descent was the first colonist to die in what became known as the Boston Massacre.
* They do repeal the Townshend's acts except Tea.
* Thomas Jefferson thought each colony should create a committee of correspondence with other colonies about British activities.
* England's new prime minister, Lord North helped the British East India Company, which was almost bankrupt

* The Boston Tea Party led to the British passing four new laws called the Coercive Acts

* This further angered the colonists because if they moved west, they would be living in territory with no elected assembly.
* By 1774 they openly rebelled.
* Concord created Minutemen trained and ready to fight the British at a minutes warning.

* On April 18, 1775, British General Gage and his troops set out to seize the militias supply depot at Concord.
* Patriots Paul Revere and William Dawes were sent to Lexington to warn the people that the British were coming.
* After the battles at Lexington and concord, the second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to address the issue of defense.
* The congress voted to adopt the militia army around Boston and named it the continental army.
* Appointed George Washington as Commander of the Army.
* Wrote the Olive Branch Petition- Document that said we don't want to fight you.
* On July 4th, 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.
* The Battle of Bunker Hill resulted in turning back to British advances.
* The colonial militia only retreated due to a lack of ammunition.
* It was a huge boost to American confidence that the untrained colonials could stand up to the feared British army.
* In January 1776, the persuasive pamphlet called common Sense, By Thomas Paine, caused many colonists to call for independence from Britain.
* Guerilla Warfare -troops hid in trees and behind walls and then ambushed British troops.
