Film Journal: The Knowing
The film, The Knowing, is very suspenseful. This movie showed and taught me about the different aspects of life. When Caleb and Abby were hearing whispers, they were only there to protect them, not to scare them. At first I thought the voices represented evil until the end. It is similar to when our subconscious tells us what we should do, but we never listen, and then regret the fact that we didn't follow our instincts because of the outcome. I feel that our subconscious is our inner voice. I feel that it is God either warning us or telling us right from wrong, leading us in the right direction. I believe that the numbers that were written down symbolized the Bible because the paper that displayed the time capsule for those years were the disasterous events that occurred over time. It was very immense that John was able to discover the pattern within the numbers, since know one else was aware of the fact that they were all written down and represented a lot of important events. Those numbers signified our future. There are a lot of people today that believe that the Bible is a written document of what life has to offer, what has occurred, and what is to come in the future. The same way, in which John could not stop any of the events that he discovered from happening, we cannot prevent what may happen to us in the future.
In a social aspect, John didn't have any faith or any beliefs. Since, he wasn't aware of when his wife was dying, he believed that everything on Earth happened just to happen. When he discovered the numbers and the meaning behind them, he became traumatized after he witnessed the crashing of the plane and train. After that event, John began to have faith. It began to show when he decided to call his father once he felt the world was going to end. At, first during the movie, when Caleb was in his room and seen the fire and burning animals, I felt that it epitomized hell. I then began to believe that that scene was a warning from the whispers of the heat and fire shown at the end of the movie.
From a spiritual point of view, John knew that he wanted his son to live long. So he sacrificed his life, so that his son could be saved since he wasn't the chosen one. He knew that was the only ay for his son to be ok and live on. At the end of the movie when they showed Caleb and Abby, I believed that it represented Adam and Eve and the tree of life. The fact that John sacrificed his life for his son, was a representation of a new beginning or new life, which gave reasoning behind the fact that Caleb and Abby were shown running towards the "tree of life."
Throughout this film I also noticed that most of the problems and tragedies that occurred was because she didn't want to listen to John. She would mainly listen to herself instead of listening to John, who was someone I believed, who was sent from God to protect
