Abstract
The concept of part-time job has long been no stranger to students. This research aims to help students gain a better understanding on the positive and negative effects of this employment. The analysis is based on the feedback of students who have been working part-time from many universities around the world. The challenge posed by the negative effects is no less. The research will help students know how to balance learning and employment.
Nowadays, in the modern society, more and more students have been engaging in part time jobs while studying at university. According to the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England, in 2006, there is about 27% of students aged 16 and over spend 6.5 hours per week for working part-time (Rokicka, November 2014). It is difficult to accurately determine the number of students, who have part-time job. However, according to some studies, in Australia, students spend 30 hours per week to work part time and in UK, one out of every 10 people has a part-time job and that figure is increasing, more and more popular in the world (Paul Barron & Constantia Anastasiadou, March,2009). Although there are many different opinions about benefits and drawbacks on this topic, it is a good idea for students having a part time job because advantages of this outweigh disadvantages. In this essay, the writer will shed a light on this problem.
Advantages of having a part time job while studying at university
It cannot be denied that having a part time job when being a student has many benefits. First of all, students will gain many experiences which help them overcome a lot of different situation in life and work. For example, if they have a part time job and obtain valuable experiences, they can fill this information in their curriculum vitae. These things will help students develop personal skills and career in the future make the employers appreciate students’ ability (Paul Barron & Constantia Anastasiadou, March,2009). Moreover, students will have more opportunities as a way to improving their communication and enhance confidence which is one of the most important skills when they answer interview questions of employers (Paul Barron & Constantia Anastasiadou, March,2009). Secondly, students can earn money to support their family. A part time job is necessary for students pay bills for daily activities such as tuition, books and living expenses (Paul Barron & Constantia Anastasiadou, March,2009).
