Untapped Potential

The psychologist and educator, John Gardner, states that we, as human beings, tend to ignore our own potentials and often abandon our goals and dreams. He also states that many people go through life knowing little to none of their full abilities. He makes the analogy of a miner in a gold mine, and how we are a lot like that. A miner goes into a mine in search of gold. He expects to find gold right away, and wants to do it with little work. The miner gives up because he thinks the mine is worthless. This is a lot like us and out talents. If we try at something and fail, we give up trying. We as human beings tend to have untapped potentials because we give up on certain things so easily.

This statement hold true for me, personally. I am a person who, when I try something and do not get it at first, usually gives up right away. I like to try different things but tend to abandon them if I do not succeed at first. I have a really good friend who never gives up with anything she does and tries to encourage me to do the same. Janis is this person, and she inspires me to be more optimistic in any situation. She always motivates me to reach for my fullest potential and will do anything to help me get there. I do feel like I have some untapped potential and I feel bad that I never try to encounter it. I wish that it would be easier for me to accept defeat and keep trying instead of giving up when I do not get something at first. I will try my hardest to reach my untapped potential from here on and will attempt to keep it this way for a while.
