1. What do you describe as Panera's purpose, mission, and strategy?
Panera Bread's purpose as a restaurant is to satisfy their customers with freshly backed breads, fresh hot gourmet soups and quick service. Another purpose for Panera Bread's is the continuation of satisfying customers once their meal is completed with providing free recent newspapers, free Wi-Fi, and comfortable couches. The mission of Panera Bread is to provide high valued products and customer service. The other part of their mission is the commitment to the neighborhood, service, added value, community, opportunities, entrepreneurism, innovation, and integrity, while performing their business daily. A strategy for Panera Bread's include, operating in ways that surpass competition, by watching market trends to make improvements to the company as a whole.
2. How well has Ron Shaich utilized the open systems model of originations in moving Panera Bread Company forward in its competitive environment?
Ron Shaich has done a good job utilizing the open system model because he has used outside sources to contribute to the companies on going success. He uses technology to see what competitors are doing and he goes another step forward to beat them. Also, using the technology in Panera Bread's, such as Wi-Fi. Having other amenities in the restaurants such as couches and newspapers make the customers visit more memorable in which they will continues to visit. Customer's visits will also continue to increase if there is exceptional customer service, along with their food being served correctly, the first time. Third, another open system that Mr. Shaich has created is using reusable dishes and silverware, unlike other fast food restaurants. Using reusable dishes and silverware is a good thing for a company because nowadays, there are so many people all about going green to protect the environment. Finally, if there is good team work behind the counter and employees are getting along customers will see this as a positive work ethic instead of a negative, like some places do have. All in all, I believe Mr. Shaich has done a good job utilizing the open system model.
3. What are the challenges to the management process posed by Panera Bread's fast-paced growth? What problems do you see Shaich having to resolve to continue his record of success with the firm?
Some challenges for the management process due to rapid growth would be planning and controlling. Planning would be a problem because with planning the company has to define goals, set objectives, and identify actions to be achieved. I view this as a challenge because with rapid growth it is difficult to meet goals and objectives if they are changing.
