The class member are needed to gather at McDonald that located on Malioboro Mall as rendezvous point and Ms Handini gave us a brief explanation on the simulation. In the briefing she also provide us with the guidelines of the simulation.
The objectives of the simulation project is to give us the opportunity to experience real negotiation activities, enhance the capability in making negotiation strategy and enhance students business communication capability.
We are free to work on the project in group or individually. The task that need to be accomplished is each individual have to bring home at least one item that earned without using any cash, fully on negotiation. The rules to get the item are we can’t use personal money, steal, conduct a criminal activities, begging, become a street performer, or do other unethical activities.
STRATEGY AND OBJECTIVES PLANNING
Strategy Planning
At the start, what each individuals do is trying to reconsider whether to do the project individually or by group. I choose to work in group because I believe with the idea “The more the merrier” . The group consist of:
- Armandyasika W. J. Putra
- M. Risang Bagus W.
- Emeralda P. Kalyana
- Imanuel Abri Utomo
- Joscelind Akiko C.
- Imanda Mulia R.
In order to accomplished the task, brainstorming the ideas of what could be done is needed to determine the possible actions that available in the surrounding. At first, many ideas that were collected and the dimension of the idea was diverse. The ideas that were collected are communicated in the group so each of the idea could be assessed whether the benefit are in favor with all group members. The team finally agreed to help the vendor around Malioboro to sell their products and in return, we will get an item for each members.
The strategy is to sell the product above the standard price therefore we will earn income that will be eventually given to the vendor in order to get the item so our action will not inflict a loss to the vendors. Therefore, we will use win-win strategy that generate benefits to both party. There are two segment of product that we discuss, whether its goods or services. Since the surrounding consist of variety of vendors that sell goods that relatively cheap and easy to sell, we agreed to sell goods.
Objective Planning
Our objective is to fulfill the task of the project by helping a vendor to resell their goods with a target of selling it on mark up price then the income from selling the goods could be used to cover the cost to acquire the item that we will bring home. Several things are reconsider in order to achieve our objectives. Before we start our action, we create a set of plan that is necessary to be done in our to-do list:
- Check the market price of potential goods
- Ask several vendors to get the knowledge of the market price of the goods
- Offer our proposal to the vendor to help them resell their goods
- Set an agreement to form a contact between us and the vendors
- Resell goods with mark-up price to earn income that will cover the cost to get the item
- Return to the vendor that accept the proposal
THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS
The Start: Market Survey
In order to obtain knowledge of the market, we do a survey to find what our team desired goods to be sold. Some of the potential goods are beverages, balloon, accessories, and traditional clothes. By observing the market we found our product that we will resell, which is Bracelet. In the survey we found out there are several type of bracelet that provided in the market some of them is:
- Wood/Bamboo bracelet, with the cost of Rp 5,000/piece
- Rope bracelet, with the cost of Rp 3,000/piece
After we finished our survey, we obtain sufficient data regarding the market around Malioboro and we decided to find the suitable vendors, that is have a positive atmosphere to approach and that open for negotiation because several vendor might doesn’t serve a good feedback towards a negotiation.
The Search of the Vendor
We walk around the line of vendors at the right side of the street and we found an accessories tenant that seems approachable. First, we ask about the price of the bracelets she sell. The respond of the vendor toward us is polite and it makes us sure that she is the “Chosen One”.
