Question 1
- ‘Time series’ data is a set of observations collected at usually discrete and equally spaced time intervals.
‘Cross – sectional’ data are observations that come from different individuals or groups at a single point in time.
- So, in this case, the data is a ‘cross-sectional’ because this is a data collected of a period for each customer. It does not take the time variable into account.
- Educational Level: Categorical Ordinal
- This is because, educational level can be sorted into group and counted, and ordered.
Years’ experience: Numerical Discrete
- This is because, years’ experience is the number of years of experience with NabWest Bank of Tasmania. So that, there is no ranking between the numbers and can be any value within the range.
PC Job: Categorical Nominal
- This is because, it can be assigned a code in the form of number labelling for whether a customers’ job is related to computer or not and it does not imply any order.
Gender: Categorical Nominal
- This is because, it can be assigned a code in the form of number labelling for whether a customer is male or female and it does not imply any order.
Salary: Numerical Continuous
- This is because, salary is the set of numbers of money which each employee will get depend on the different perspectives. It can be continuous.

- In table 1c(ii), the gender and the PC jobs are categorical nominal which is qualitative or non-numeric as mentioned in part (b) above. Additionally, gender is nominated 0 as male and 1 as female, and PC jobs is nominated 0 as job NOT computer related and 1 as job computer related. So that, the unusual or unexpected conveyed by these statistics is the calculation of Mean, Standard deviation, Minimum, Maximum for Gender and PC jobs are not accurate.
- Those 3 tables are grouped by variables expressing the dependent of each variable to each other.
- Table 1c(i) includes two different variables which are educational level and job grade. The job grade can be chosen to depend on the educational level.
- Table 1c(ii) includes two different variables which are gender and PC jobs. As the background of the assignment said, The NabWest bank of Tasmania is facing a gender discrimination suit, therefore, they put gender and PC jobs into one table to see the effects of gender on the selective of jobs.
- Table 1c(iii) includes four different variables which are years’ experience, age, year prior, and salary. The Bank put them all in one table because they want to see how the age, years’ experience and years prior affect to the salary. For example, the first employee is 26, got 3 years’ experience and got 1 year prior which get $52,000 per year.
