Narrative
16-year-old Jake Enego sped across the large football field, his clothes damp from the pouring rain and sweat and his new Nike dunks splattered with mud. An odd squelching noise followed him all the way across the grassy area and occasionally, his foot would send up a large fountain of water, further covering him in foul, muddy liquid. Up ahead, his destination, the Infinity Studio of the Performing Arts, a small dark speck against the grey sheet of rain pouring down on him, was gradually increasing in size. This seemed to encourage the teenager as he sped up, his eyes squinting against the rain which was getting heavier and heavier by the second.
The odd squelching noise was suddenly accompanied by the heavy beats of 'Y' by MBLAQ, issuing from Jake's back pocket. Without slowing his pace, his hand plunged into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
'Yo, J, where the hell you at, man? The crew ain't gonna wait for you, the auditions about to start!"
'I messed up, Ty, can yall just hold up a few more minutes? ' Jake panted, as he tripped and almost fell over a small branch.
'You better get cha ass over here quickly, man or you out! I'm sick of yall being late'
Jake hung up and swore under his breath as he almost crashed into the fence surrounding the field. The squelching sound was replaced by a soft thud, thud, thud as he burst through the glass doors of the entrance, causing a tall and extremely attractive ballerina to drop her bag in surprise, and raced across the marble white floor of the administration office, leaving a trail of brown, muddy footprints in his wake. He finally arrived at the noisy and crowded hall where the auditions were being held, and, after a few moments, spotted his crew sitting near the stairs leading to the stage. He made his way towards them, all the while glancing at the surrounding crowd, whom where all either sitting in a bunch chatting noisily, practicing their dance pieces or crowded in a circle while the more talented individuals 'freestyle' to the beats created by an ipod dock connected to a large speaker.
Tyler, the leader of the crew, stood up as he saw Jake and gestured him to hurry up. As Jake approached them, he could make out the dark look Ty was giving him, with his fists clenched so hard that you could see the green lines of veins encircling them. Sensing a full beat down coming up, Jake quietly sat down next to the rest. Amy, the shy little girl in the crew with dark, long hair hanging over her shoulders and her cap pulled low over her eyes, waved at him in greeting, although Jake was too scared to return the gesture. He winced as Ty stood up and positioned himself in front of the crew. All eyes gazed at him, giving him their full attention.
'Yo, listen up!' He announced, his tone suggesting that no one was to interrupt him. 'Thanks to J here, we're 15 minutes late for the audition. Normally I would kick his lil ass to the curb, but lucky for yall, the judges of the audition are late too.'
He paused for a moment, and the crew held their breath, expecting the worse to come....... and it did.
'Now, less sitting and more practicing, yall were sloppy in yesterday's rehearsals and If I see one mess up, yall gone!'
No one dared to complain or argue with him, but as Jake got up with the rest of the crew, he could hear a few boys muttering acidly under their breath. He positioned himself next to Amy as the crew got ready in their formations, their hearts beating against their ribcage, hoping against hope that their dance would be flawless and would satisfy Tyler's barely contained fury. A couple of people around nudged their friends and soon, we had a large group of people crowding around
