So far in life and career, this writer has not have to deal with any ethical issues during a presentation, but that is not a reason to not be concern about ethics. Speakers should be concerned about public speaking ethics because he or she has the power to heal or harm the audience. The words a speaker use can either help or hurt. The lack of knowledge and use of ethics can harm your career as a public speaker. The study of public speaking ethics will help speakers to develop internal guidelines to be able to know. Practicing ethical speaking and presentation is not just a matter of common sense. We live in an uncommon world, constantly changing, constantly morphing.
What you say would include the words used, how you explain an idea or the way you use illustrations you and humor. Being bias is also an aspect of ethics public speakers need to be concerned about. At the same time, intonation, pace, pitch, power, sarcasm, and even preparation can affect the way the message comes across. When presenting, accuracy, honesty to the audience and self, originality, plagiarism, language abuse or abusive language, degrading or derogatory speech, divisive speech, are some of the things that a speaker needs to be concerned about. There is a unique set of rules to follow when using other people's material. Failure to give attribution is considered stealing in this industry. Considering the ethical foundations and their applications will help in the decision making process. Politicians, athletes, and other famous people have been forced to apologize because of unethical conduct. A speaker needs to act in ways consistent with the message being presented. Acting disinterested or unconcerned when presenting bad news can offend or worry the audience. Showing enthusiasm in delivery by quicker movements, more variety, and a faster rate of speech when reading an exciting climax of a positive presentation can produce the same enthusiasm in the audience.
In conclusion, ethics have to be considered when speaking in public from preparation of the speech to the end of the presentation. What you say, how you say it, and how you present it, are the foundation of public speaking ethics.
