Green Computing
Green computing basically means reducing electricity and environmental waste while on the computer. There are several ways to achieve this goal. In this research paper we will discuss a few. An easy way is when you first go to purchase your computer making sure it is ENERGY STAR rated. Energy Star is a voluntary labeling program which is designed to promote and recognize energy-efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment, and other technologies. Green computing also refers to the recyclability and biodegradability of a product and its factory waste. A few good things to practice while trying to achieve the goal at hand are do not leave the computer running overnight or why it is not in use for an extended amount of time. Always attempt to use paperless methods to communicate, and if you must use paper buy recycled paper and then recycle it when you are finished with it. Also make sure that you recycle your toner cartridges, old computers and printers. There is an estimated 700 million personal computers that are no longer used and are obsolete. The U.S. government has proposed a bill that would require computer recycling in the entire United States. Along with Energy Star, Climate Savers Computing Initiative is a group coming together to reduce the electric power consumption of PCs in active and inactive states. They are also trying to highly encourage all computer companies to make it an option on all computers to make sure that the pc itself and all its components power off after a period of inactivity. With this being said there are many people and organizations really pushing green computing. By practicing a few easy procedures it could make the environment around us a much healthier place.
