Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that the US should ban smoking.
I. Throughout my life, I have always lived in a house full of smokers. (Continue about current living situation as well as the effect it's had on me.)
II. Most are aware of obvious harmful effects of smoking such as lung cancer, but many don't know about other detrimental effects of smoking.
III. The US should ban smoking in general due to smoking's harmful effects on an individual, those around them, as well as unborn infants.
I. Smoking has harmful effects on your own body.
A. Smoking has harmful physical effects on the body.
1. Smoking affects the lungs ability to function.
2. Smoking affects the heart as well.
B. Smoking has psychological affects too.
1. Smokers have a lower level of MAO.
2. Lower Levels of MAO cause depression, ADHD, and substance abuse.
II. Secondhand smoking has harmful effects on others.
A. Secondhand smoke causes death and disease in those who don't smoke.
1. This can include cardiovascular, respiratory, and reproductive effects.
a. 25- 30% increase of heart disease
b. 20-30% increase of lung cancer
B. Smoking has harmful effects on children in the home.
1. This can include less harmful things like asthma and ear problems.
2. This can also result in things as harmful as sudden infant death syndrome
C. "Cleaning the air" isn't as effective as it may seem.
1. Separate ventilated rooms and cleaning systems are not effective.
2. The only solution is to eliminate smoking indoors.
III. Smoking during pregnancy effects the health of unborn children.
A. The fetus is at risk for miscarriage, growth restriction, and early delivery.
B. Pregnancies in woman who smoke are considered high risk.
C.. Children had increased behavioral, emotional, and relationship problems.

I. Smoking in almost any location is not only harmful to yourself, but to many others.
