It all began in the 1950s; manufactures began to mass produce televisions at a relatively affordable price. This created a boom in sales of televisions. As more and more families were able to afford a television in their living room, broadcasting channels thus began to produce more shows to attract television owners. Easy access to an entertainment at home eventually created the advantages and disadvantages of watching televisions. Such as theaters, cinemas and opera houses were being substituted by a little black box in the living rooms making the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Undisputedly, television is harmful in various measures such as creating passivity, discouraging communication and most importantly creating false sense of reality, it is important that the viewers must be aware of such factors.

Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). However, if they can't find any similarities between them after an exhausting conversation, the embarrassment fills up the room which automatically leads to watching television, providing them with a sense of relief. Additionally, television distracts people's attention to other members around them. For instance, about 66% of American households have dinner in front of a television with their family (statistics by Catholic Education Resource Center), and they are so absorbed into watching the shows that they no longer ask each other about their day. Thus, television discourages smooth conversations and interactions.
It is without a doubt that watching television creates a false sense of reality. With the help of computer graphics, show producers are now able to produce television shows ever more fascinating but also at the same time further away from the reality. In a survey conducted in Hong Kong after the release of the movie "Matrix", 35% of all males said that they lost sense
