Intelligence quotient (IQ) testing is scientifically controversial and has a varied history and about the validity of measures and interpretation of intelligence test scores, and there are at least two major points in debate about intelligence testing. Most IQ tests consist of verbal and performance test items that result in a score with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. As such, the majority of the population lies in a range of 85 to 115 on most IQ tests. The numerous discussions of the 20th-century development of intelligence measures most conclude with one or more of the following precepts:
1. Current cognitive ability measures, traditionally called "IQ tests," now use broader definitions of intelligence factors and less age/development focus, so instead of the descriptor IQ. In an attempt to explain some group differences on intelligence test scores, it was suggested distinguishing between intelligence and intelligent behavior.
2. Although part of cognitive ability is inherited, debate continues as to the exact proportion and influence of genetics versus environment.
3. IQ or cognitive ability tests are strong predictors of academic achievement and social success within groups, but score variability due to education and opportunity makes individual predictions possible but not definitive.
4. IQ tests effectively screen for cognitive strengths and weaknesses deserving special education opportunities, including programs for the retarded or gifted. Discrepancies between IQ scores and specific areas of achievement are often used to diagnosis learning disabilities.
Despite demonstrated uses of cognitive ability measures (IQ tests) in schools and employment, a number of scholarly works debate social consequences, ethnic discrimination, and biological determinism. Certainly scholars differ on the use or potential misuse of IQ tests; some even hold that intelligence is social in origin.
One of the main strengths of IQ testing is the ability to find out if a person has the aptitude to learn. IQ test has been used to admit people to prestigious organizations and to put children in special education programs. Therefore, area such as, music math, language, and science. IQ test can be very helpful in guiding some one in the right field or studies. These tests are used to award grants or scholarships to gifted students in get the funding to give them a bright future. IQ testing is property designing a test to accurately determine intelligence across a board spectrum of our society. Groups which have done better on the test have historically been a part of the group designing the test itself. These tests also can not determine various forms of intelligence which are important to society, such as the ability to work well with others or work well with your hands.
