Two weeks before summer ended going into sophomore year, I broke my pinky toe. It was a saturday night that I decided to stay out late with my friends, knowing I had to wake up early to run errands with my mom. When she woke me up the next morning, I walked down the stairs, my vision fuzzy with sleepiness and missed two steps. I could not believe how a small fall resulted into me laying down on a bed in the emergency room with two nurses wrapping a splint around my foot.
I started my first two months of school in a boot. My biggest disappointment was not being able to try out for the dance company to be in the Nutcracker. Because I could not be a part of the dance, I participated in the dance committee as an usher. Being the optimist that I was, I reminded myself of the spring auditions next semester. But I did not expect my uncle to be incapable of providing my transportation when the time rolled around for spring show preparations. Once again, I was an usher. When Junior year began, I was determined to audition for the Nutcracker a second time.
Well, I did end up making it to auditions, but since I had not danced in a year, my body was not prepared and I unfortunately did not pass auditions. Because I had dance as a class, I was able to dance in the production, just not be part of company. For the rest of the class time that was not spent on the winter production, I worked hard to prepare myself for spring auditions.
When the casting list was posted on the bulletin at the end of spring auditioning week, I left school with a bright smile on my face, feeling happier than ever. To me, making the cuts for company auditions was the greatest accomplishment as an after school activity and spot. I realized that I can achieve anything I desire with a great deal of effort and continuous tries.
