Body

Herzberg 's two factor theory ( also called motivation-hygiene theory) page 601

Definition : the motivation theory that intrinsic factors are related to job satisfaction and motivation , whereas extrinsic factors are associated with job dissatisfaction.

 Issue:

Management decided to renovate Sally team's office in orther to improve their performace. They improve the lighting in the office, put in new air-conditioning units and give all the team new computers.

- According to Herzberg, when managers want to eliminate job dissatisfaction , they can use hygiene factors. That are factors eliminating job dissatisfaction, but not motivate.

- In addition, to motivate people in their job, motivators, the intrinsic factors should be used to increase job satisfaction. In this case, management decide to initiate a peformance-based reward scheme and set up goals and expectations for the team. The goals are not only significantly more challenging but also more ambiguous requirements such as to " improve work quality " and to " try hard". Herzberg assumed that the only way to motivate the employees is to give them challenging work in which they can assume responsibility (Harvard Business Review). It also induce employees the ablity to achieve growth in their job.

Reinforcement:

Robins stated that reinforcement theory is the theory that behaviour is a function of its consequences.

Mc Shane: Behaviour modifications (also known as reinforcement theory) are a theory that explains learning in terms if the antecedents and consequences of behaviour.

There are some contigencies of reinforcement

Management begins to notice that Sally's team is not working hard. They renovate the office to improve performance. That is considered positive reinforcement because it typically increases the probability that they will use that behaviour in the future.

In addition, 4 months later, management of Advert Co. continue to try to improve their performance again. Management decides to initiate a performance- based reward scheme: a clock with company's logo on it. It also is positive reinforcement because it makes the team remain their behaviour in the future.
