Something I Dislike

By: Salapare, Mark Dennis P.

We all differ in many ways. Out of them all, one major area is on account of our likes and dislikes. Many people hate their jobs. There are some who hate or unsatisfied with their physical appearance. There are some people who hate slow internet connections, making assignments in algebra, waking up in a cold and early morning, making very long essays, washing of own clothes, reading Philosophy books and other things. There are many things that I dislike; but the ones I dislike the most are noise, crowds and laziness.

Noise disturbs me greatly. This is why I hate to live in a city proper. In a city, vehicles run to and fro dawn till midnight. This makes the city very noisy indeed. The voices of thousands of people living close to one another also add to the noises caused by the vehicles. Besides, there are noises from the factories in a city. If I am watching television, I have to put it into the max level of volume just to hear the sounds and voice of the television. When I go outside our house, many commercial building and restaurants are there near the street in our home. That’s why I hate to live in city because I am always tempted buy and eat those delicious French fries and doughnuts near our house.

I also dislike crowds. Crowds make movement difficult. If a place is crowded, it is not easy to move about or to do any work quickly. If we are in a hurry to go somewhere, a crowd can delay our progress. And I hate laziness also, because a lazy boy is a problem not only to his parents but also to others. By refusing to do any work, he compels others to do for him. Sometimes a weak and poor person has to work hard to bring food for a strong and healthy person who is lazy. Such a person is really bad and ill-mannered. As long as he gets what he needs and wants, he does not care what others think of him. I hate to see such a person, even if he is my own brother or father.

Likewise, there are certain persons who never keep their word. They, perhaps, get pleasure out of breaking their own promise. Such persons can never endear themselves to me. I prefer to keep them at bay. Then there is treachery which I dislike most. Treacherous persons are great enemies of everyone including their own country. They sell their souls, and conscience for petty, selfish gains. Such persons must be kept at an arm’s length. Lastly, I dislike intellectual snobbery. Some persons have the tendency to show their knowledge by using bombastic and high- sounding words. They think that by showing off they can command respect of people around them. Their very sight reminds me of the famous quote: ‘Empty vessels make much noise.’

There are many things in this world that you are wishing it would not exist in our world or maybe you wish that it might be changed. But if you look deeper, the reason why you dislike a thing is because you are thinking at it negatively. “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.” That’s what Marcus Aurelius said about the positivity of life. Even though it is a bad or not a good thing, Dwell on its beauty and you will realize that even though it is bad there is one thing that makes it beautiful or likeable. Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.
