There was nothing to do. Fate wasn't on their side through out the play every time it would find a way to make sure that something bad would happen to them. Romeo shouts "O, I am fortune's fool!" after killing Tybalt this shows that he had no control over what he was doing and that he couldn't have done anything to prevent it. Romeo and Juliet then understand that fate is against them but don't stop.
