This report will focus on BP. We have selected PESTEL, SWOT and Porter's five forces for the analysis.

PESTEL

Political

BP has been affected by political in the Middle East. Capitalizing on improved relations between Britishand Libyan government, BPin partnership with the Libya Investment Corporation (LIC) signed an exploration and production agreement with National Oil Company (NOC) of Libya (BP, 2007). The Libyan crisis delayed the 2010 start date but there are plans to resume exploration shortly (BP, 2011).

Though it has done well, BP had to pull out of the Russian Rosneft deal due to political and legislative obstacles.For political expediency BP suspended its dividend payments in 2010 as a result of the oil spill in Gulf of Mexico (The Street, 2010).

Economic

The Gulf coast oil spill (2010) was an economic disaster for BP costing dearly politically, economically and an environmentally. This resulted in holding back dividends and sales of some businesses to raise capital.'BP today set out plans to sell off another $15 billion (£9.36 billion) worth of assets'.It has also promised to boost pay outs to shareholders after reaching a "turning point" after last April's Gulf of Mexico disaster. BP has also said it will continue to develop its competitively strong downstream businesses" (thisislondon,2011).

Social

BP prides itself on social responsibilities (BP,2011). The company believes business is about a continuous relationship of promise and delivery that builds an understanding of each other's needs and aspirations. (BP,1998) BP social responsibility is about constructive and responsible engagement in all the countries in which it builds long-term mutual advantage. BP has undertaken comprehensive responsibility of restoring the economy and the environment (BP,2011) bygoing beyond the federal cap of $75 million by agreeing to set aside a whopping $20 billion to pay as damage claims for disaster in the Gulf of Mexico (rediff.com, 2010)

Technology

Exploiting digital technologies has improved BP performance and optimized production. The

American government had to depend on BP's superior technology to shut the well and clean environment in the Gulf Coast.BP set up its Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) to stem the flow by using undersea robots to contain the leaking oil (BBC, 2010).The use of remotely operated technology (BP,2011) to stop spill confirmed BP's superiority above its competitors. It continues to invest in further university research.

Environment
