A team is a made of small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, that set of goals and approach the goals they hold for themselves.
Type of teams
There are 4 types of teams that are self-managing work teams, cross-functional teams, virtual teams, and crews.
Self-Managing Work Teams
They are the best-known work team because of the workers that take much of the responsibility on managing there own work. Work teams are used in a variety of activities such as making a telephone, motorcycles, directories, or large components for a large computer. They are also given the responsibility for or "ownership" of an entire product or service they work on. Also work teams rely lesser on supervisor and more on workers assuming more responsibilities for managing their own activities.
Cross-Functional Teams
They are work groups of persons with different specialties, that come together to accomplish a task. The speciality of this group is to get workers that know different things to accomplish a task. A typically application for this type of team is video cell phone. Among the specialties needed on such a team would be computer science, engineering, manufacturing, industrial design, marketing, and finance.
Virtual Teams
This team is a group of person that work by electronic communication rather than face-by-face meetings.
This type of teams use electronic communication because it is less expensive. For example a person from iceland that is expert in a field technician to hold a electronic meeting so he can bring his partners in a physical location. Trust plays a important role in this types of teams.
Crews
This type of work groups is a group of person who have specific role to bring specific event again and again under different environmental conditions. There are different criteria for this groups such as:
-Clear roles and responsibilities
-Work flow well established before anyone joins the team
-Careful coordination required with other members to perform the task
-Groups needs to be in a specific environment to complete its task
-Different people can join the group without interfering with its operation or mission.
The advantages and disadvantage of teams and teamwork.
Disadvantage is that is that teams need to have numerous changes in the outside world, and teams are often required to work close with customers and suppliers.
Advantages are that they make decisions over individual efforts and they also gain synergy that is when a situation in which the groups total output exceeds the sum of each individuals contribution.
