POSITION ARGUMENT
Definition - Position arguments scrutinizes one side of a controversial issue. Position arguments are philosophical in nature, they are arguments on which political and social principles are founded, laws are written, and business and government policies are established.
Key features - The key features for writing a position argument are; have you:
* Chosen a controversial issue?
* Clearly stated a position?
* Recognized other positions and possible objections?
* Developed a well-reasoned argument?
* Provided convincing supporting evidence?
* Projected a reasonable persona?
How the argument begins?
The argument begins with an explanation of their issue and a clearly stated position.
How the argument concludes?
Provide convincing supporting evidence in figures pacts and specific details. The more valid facts supporting the position the more reason there is for the reader to accept that position is valid.
PROPOSAL ARGUMENT
Definition - Proposal arguments examine existing conditions, and look towards the future. Proposal arguments are the most common kind of argument, they make recommendations for changes in the status quo- namely changes in a policy, practice, or attitude.
Key features - Proposals have two basic functions: (1) They inform readers that there is a problem; and (2) they make recommendations about how to correct those problems. Key features for writing a proposal argument are; have you:
* Clearly stated the problem?
* Clearly proposed a solution?
* Explained why the solution will work?
* Demonstrated how the solution will work?
* Addressed possible objections?
* Shown why the solution is better than alternatives?
* Projected a reasonable persona?
How the argument begins?
Because a proposal argument seeks to change the readers mind or behavior, you must first demonstrate that there is such a problem. The writer should make the problem more convincing supporting the claim by showing solid evidence.
