Mission Vision and You
I used to work for the Sandia Resort and Casino. In the future, I would like to work there again as the resort’s General Manager. Before I would ever do so, it would have to be with the understanding that mission and vision statements would have to be created and in place in order to direct and control the future of resort and casino operations.
Mission and Vision Statements
Without a mission statement, a company stands for nothing and employees can lose their way. This does not bode well for operations, profits or employee moral either. As of now, Sandia Resort and Casino has neither a mission statement, nor a vision statement. They only have a terrible slogan which is “Close to Home Far from Ordinary”. “A company’s mission statement differs from its vision in that it encompasses both the purpose of the company as well as the basis of competition and competitive advantage” (University of Phoenix, 2014). “A mission statement is a set of organizational goals that include both the purpose of the organization, its scope of operations, and the basis of its competitive advantage” (University of Phoenix, 2014). “The vision statement is broad based; it is a goal that is “massively inspiring, overarching, and long term. It represents a destination that is driven by and evokes passion” (University of Phoenix, 2014).
Effects of Mission Vision Statements
I am very familiar with the operations as well as the management of Sandia Resort & Casino. It is Native American owned and I am a member of the tribe that owns it. Not having a mission or vision statement aligns with tribal leadership (ownership) exactly. They do not know where they are going, they do not know what they are doing, they have no business experience and they have no business education. If ownership did, there would be a mission and vision statement in place as well as better management.
Managing with Mission and Vision Statements
I had the opportunity to work at Sandia Resort & Casino in several different departments. I also applied for the General Manager position recently. As an employee, the business not having mission or vision statements affected me negatively. I felt I did not know what the company stood for which means they did not know what to expect from their employees. As a general manager, the first thing I would do is create a vision and mission statement for the company. I would make sure the department managers understood it and the employees practiced it.
